Banned Film to Air on Maori Television After Actress Punished

MY TEHRAN FOR SALE, an Australian film critical of Iran, will screen on Maori Television on 5 November following reports its lead actress has been sentenced to jail and 90 lashes.

According to an Iranian opposition website, actress Marzieh Vafamehr was this week sentenced to a year in jail for her role in the film, which criticises the Islamic republic’s hard-line policies.

MY TEHRAN FOR SALE screens on Saturday, 5 November at 9.30pm.

Directed by Iranian-Australian Granaz Moussavi and produced by Adelaide-based Cyan Films, MY TEHRAN FOR SALE, tells the story of a young actress in contemporary Tehran whose stage work was banned by authorities

She meets an Australian-Iranian actor at an underground rage who offers her a chance for a new life free from oppression.

Vafamehr, who appears in scenes without a hijab headscarf, was first arrested in Tehran in July. Iranian authorities have not released details of the charges against her.

The film was never intended for release in Iran, but has been distributed illegally and condemned by the country’s conservative commentators.

MY TEHRAN FOR SALE screens on Maori Television on Saturday 5 November at 9.30pm.
