World Cup Rugby Player Honours His City
Rugby World Cup All Black Piri Weepu
from Wainuiomata has honoured the City of Lower Hutt, says
acting Mayor David Bassett.
“Piri was truly outstanding throughout the tournament and stepped up to display great leadership to help the All Blacks qualify for the final.
“The pressure on the All Blacks leading into the final knockout series was extreme and Piri, through his humility and a practical approach, encouraged his fellow players at a critical time.
“Throughout the tournament Piri showed his skills and versatility as a player and honoured his roots as a local boy. He will forever be a member of one of New Zealand’s finest Rugby teams and winners of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
“His actions brought pride to Lower Hutt and, in particular, Wainuiomata – we honour him,” the acting Mayor said.
