Last Minute Shopping Fiesta planned for this Sunday

A huge array of entertainment and activity is planned for those doing their last minute shopping this Sunday in Taupō.

The Towncentre Taupō SOS (Shopping on Sunday) Day is being held on Sunday 18 December, from 10am to 3pm.

“It’s the Sunday before Christmas,” explains Towncentre Taupō General Manager, Traceylee Hooton, “and we know that plenty of people will be needing to get their last minute Christmas shopping sorted. We’ve planned a great line up of activities, entertainment and promotions to make it a fun and festive day for all.”

With buskers and performers creating a festive and lively atmosphere within our town centre, there will be plenty of street entertainment for the shoppers and families.

“We’re thrilled to have a professional performer in Taupō as part of the SOS event,” said Ms Hooton. “Vinyl Burns is an internationally renowned street performer, and he will be doing four performances on Sunday. Make sure you’re either outside Whitcoulls at 10am, Top Gear Cycles and Eruption Café at 11.30am, Heu heu St outside Smiths Sports Shoes at 1.00pm or Suncourt Shopping Centre in the main courtyard at 2.30pm to catch his amazing show.”

You’ll find a bouncy castle in the laneway at the rear of Taupō’s Westpac bank and children can have their faces painted outside the Toy Chest. Horomatangi St will come alive with Christmas Carols as the Taupō Concert Band is performing outside Whitcoulls from 11.30am, followed by the Taupō School of Music.

“As part of our focus on providing old fashioned fun in Taupō and great memories, we’re getting the chalk out and creating a hopscotch challenge around town as well as gutterboard and hula hoop competitions. Kids can have a go and win some fun prizes,” said Ms Hooton. We’ll also be announcing the winner of the Destination Great Lake Taupo ‘Guess the Great Local competition. Hundreds of entries have been received where the community had the opportunity to match photos with the names of 9 local celebrities; one lucky entry will take away $1000 cash thanks to the Lake Taupō Accommodation Association.

As well as being well entertained throughout the day, shoppers can also go in the draw to win some major prizes as part of the SOS event.

Every purchase made on Sunday can be entered into the one-day only promotion and then be in the draw to win one of six prizes.

“Thanks to some generous support from local businesses, we’re offering all shoppers the chance to win a great prize just in time for Christmas,” said Ms Hooton. “It’s really easy, all you need to do is write your name on the back of a till or eftpos receipt from a purchase made on Sunday, drop it in the entry box outside Whitcoulls, and every minutes we’ll draw one lucky name. They will then win either a watch valued at $360 from Urban Edge, $100 voucher from Mainly Silver, a canvas print from Quality Print, a pair of Keen woman’s shoes from Hikoi, two family passes to the Chateau Tongariro Ice Skating rink and a $150 fashion apparel package from Sport Shop.”

The TrustPower Santa Cave will also be open upstairs at Whitcoulls from 10am to 2pm, and the Paper Plus Gift Wrapping centre will be open from 10am to 3pm.
