Artists to gain fresh perspectives in Asia
Artists to gain fresh perspectives in Asia
December 15, 2011
Five New Zealand artists will head to Asia next year after being chosen for the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s 2012 artist-in-residence exchanges.
Auckland-based installation artist Tiffany Singh will be the first New Zealander to undertake an Asia New Zealand Foundation (Asia:NZ) exchange at 1.Shanthi Road studio and gallery in Bangalore, India. Wellington-based photographer Kate Woods has been chosen for the other new residency, at the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing, China.
Liyen Chong, currently based in Auckland, will head to Goyang Art Studio in South Korea, while Christchurch photographer Tim Veling will travel to Japan for the S-AiR Sapporo residency in Hokkaido.
Kerry Ann Lee will undertake a residency at Taipei Artist Village. Lee has previously worked in Shanghai, through the Wellington Asia Residency Exchange (WARE) artist-in-residence programme supported by Asia:NZ. Her resulting work has featured in exhibitions both in New Zealand and China.
The five successful candidates will work at the prestigious studios and galleries for a minimum of two months.
Asia:NZ’s Director Culture Jennifer King says the foundation received impressive applications for the 2012 artist-in-residence exchanges. Interest in the new residency at 1.Shanthi Road in Bangalore was particularly high.
She says the exchanges give New Zealand artists fresh inspirations in dynamic Asian art scenes, and provide plenty of opportunities for collaboration. “Residencies can be life-changing experiences, offering the artists new perspectives - and connections that will hopefully continue into the future.”
Ms King thanks Creative New Zealand
for its ongoing funding support for the residencies in South
Korea, Japan and Taipei.
