GirlGuiding New Zealand: Not many sleeps until Tui 12!

10 January 2011

Not many sleeps until Tui 12!

Rangers and Guides around the country are preparing for the time of their lives for next week’s GirlGuiding New Zealand jamboree.

More than 2000 girls aged from 10 to 18 will descend on Rotorua this Saturday (14 January) to experience challenge and excitement at Tui 12. Held at Tui Ridge near Rotorua the jamboree runs for a week ending on Friday 20 January. A further 500 leaders and parents takes the total to over 2500 people at Tui Ridge.

“Jamboree is such as special time for everyone,” says Sonia Faulkner National President of GirlGuiding NZ. “It is a fantastic opportunity for the girls to experience new adventures, make friends and have plenty of fun.”

A huge range of fun outdoor activities are planned for the girls including rock climbing, bike and trail rides, mud slides and water activities.

The 400 Rangers, who are aged from 13 to 18 years will spend half their week camped off-site. They can choose from activities which include kayaking on Lake Taupo, tramping at Lake Tarawera, completing the Tongariro Crossing, horse trekking and water adventures at Lake Rotoma.

“We can’t plan for the weather, but fingers crossed it will be dry and warm to make the most of the spectacular Rotorua environment,” says Sonia.

In preparation for this massive event all the girls have been fundraising and practising their camping skills as Tui 12 is an outdoor camp. GirlGuiding NZ’s jamboree is held every four years.

Christchurch girls were supported by the GirlGuiding NZ Foundation and local fundraising to ensure they could make it to Tui 12.

“More than 120 girls and leaders from Canterbury received financial support to attend the Jamboree,” says Sonia.

Volunteers on the Jamboree committee have given freely of their time for the past 12 months and have spent hours and hours working to make Tui 12 a success, says Sonia.

“Our leaders are all volunteers and, along with the parent helps, we truly value the fact that they give up their free time to make this happen for girls.

“The adults go home exhausted too with many having to return to work on the Monday after taking annual leave for the week. Ask them why and they say “We just love giving back and the experiences and time spent with the girls is priceless,” says Sonia.
