Celebrity Cricket Match Set To Be A Cracker

Celebrity Cricket Match Set To Be A Cracker

This month’s Hereworth 20/20 Celebrity Cricket Match is attracting plenty of interest and locals are being urged to take a rare opportunity to get amongst a bunch of elite and well-known sportsmen.

The February 24 match is being held in the grounds of the Havelock North independent boys’ school, and the calibre of the players is set to make for a highly entertaining spectacle.

Participants include former Black Caps big hitters Mark Greatbatch and Craig McMillan, bowlers Ewen Chatfield and Simon Doull, and all-rounder Shane Thomson.

Other big names include former All Blacks Marc Ellis and Danny Lee, and former Tall Black Brendon Pongia, while former first class cricketer Graham Burnett and current Hawke’s Bay captain James de Terte also join the ranks. The event is a celebration of the school, and a fundraiser, with St John Ambulance Hawke’s Bay getting all proceeds from gate sales.

Event co-organiser Linda Calder says tickets are selling fast for two spectator packages, including the “Bells and Whistles” option, with prime seating, a catered lunch, drinks and an after match function for $175.

The second, $75 “After Match” option includes drinks and finger food, while those wanting to watch from the side-line can do so for a $5 per person gate charge.

Ms Calder says the players - and sponsors - have shown huge generosity with their participation.

“It’s fantastic that these players have given up their time for free to support this event, and there is a rare opportunity here for members of the public to buy tickets and mingle with them.”

The event is set to attract other non-playing big names, including Martin Crowe, who was set to play before an injury ruled him out. He will spend time in the marquee and commentary box.

Ms Calder says two current Hereworth School pupils and several old boys will also play, while other playing positions were quickly snapped up after being offered for sale.

An auction at the after match function will include a painting of the event by local artist Peter Williams, and other items donated by local businesses.
