Lockwood wins V8 Challenge Cup Round at Hampton Downs

Matt Lockwood completed a clean sweep in the inaugural V8 Challenge Cup round at Hampton Downs last weekend. He won all three races after putting the car on pole for the first race as fastest qualifier. In the process he set a new lap record and won the V8 SuperTourer Scholarship for the weekend.

Lockwood quickly came to grips with the track and won the first 10 lap race by over 7 seconds. He then took out the reverse grid race in convincing fashion.

“I got a great start from position 5 on the grid and managed to pass the four cars in front of me on the first corner. I’ve never had a start like it but it allowed me to keep out of trouble and control the race from the front,” Lockwood said.

Lockwood then secured his third win of the day after starting on pole and is now looking forward to the next round at Manfeild in a couple of months time.

“I hadn’t raced on this circuit until a fortnight ago but came out then in our Mazda Pro7Plus car and knocked 1.8 seconds off the old lap record while completing a clean sweep of race wins. Now I’ve done it again in the V8. It’s fast becoming my favourite track,” he said.

Lockwood also won the V8SuperTourer Scholarship which gave him 10 minutes on the track in a V8 SuperTourer on Sunday morning. “What a way to start the day, they really are an awesome car to drive,” Lockwood said.
