The 2012 New Zealand International Festival of the Arts has been an extraordinary success with both critics and audiences, says Festival Executive Director Sue Paterson.

“The buzz around Wellington has been overwhelming positive – from the magical dreamscape of James Thiérrée’s Raoul, to the sublime music of The Sixteen and the emotional power of Michael James Manaia – there have been performances to enthral and enchant everyone,’’ she says.

The 24-day Festival, which ended on Sunday, brought 900 artists from around the world to Wellington for more than 300 performances. Although the final figures will not be available until the end of the financial year, the festival is on track for a positive result, Ms Paterson says. “Attendance is up 10 per cent on 2010 and many shows sold out ahead of time.’’

In 2010, the New Zealand International Arts Festival contributed $39.2m to the economy of Wellington and its regions, says Festival Executive Chair, Kerry Prendergast.

“This is a substantial achievement, but the benefits of the Festival go beyond the financial. We work to support New Zealand artists and their professional development – this year’s Festival, for instance, had 20 per cent local content. We also grow future arts audiences and arts practitioners – through our New Zealand Post SchoolFest programme and new initiatives such as 2012’s First Contact centre.

“After 26 years, the New Zealand International Arts Festival continues to surprise and enrich the lives of its loyal fans and attract new audiences – roll on 2014!’’

Ms Paterson paid a special tribute to outgoing Artistic Director Lissa Twomey. “Lissa has brought Wellington three wonderful festivals that do all that the best festivals should do – challenge, delight and linger in the mind long after the curtain goes down.

“A huge thank-you must go also to our sponsors, patrons and friends, whose support makes the Festival possible.’’
