Night Productions Brings International Short Film Festival
Night Productions Brings International Short Film Festival Series to Kingsland
Every third Wednesday of the month Kingsland’s Nectar Bar plays host to Takes: Short Films From Around the Globe.
An initiative started in London by Kiwis Jessica Joy Wood and Carl Dixon, the boutique film festival’s next offering of international short films will take place on April 18 from 7:30pm.
Audiences can enjoy two hours of short and sharp flicks, each introduced by Jessica, while relaxing in comfortable couches and enjoying table service from the bar staff. At the end of the evening audiences are asked to vote for their favourite film and a ‘Best of Takes’ is held every six months to celebrate the most popular shorts.
Jessica and Carl, started Takes while living in London on a whim and after its success over there, decided to bring it home to New Zealand on their return.
Jessica says, “It's a pretty chilled out evening which screens films that are original, daring, captivating and we pick ones that we think will stretch audiences to see the world from a different perspective.”
Jess recalls that Takes
developed a bit of a cult following in London and was
once voted “Best Place to get Snowed In” by the
Lord Beauford Awards. “We were actually snowed
in!”
Jess and Carl met while completing a Bachelor of
Performing and Screen Arts at Unitec, and after graduating
in 2005, Jessica ventured to London with the intention of
enjoying a six week holiday and ended up staying for over
four years. Carl followed a year later and it was in London
that they founded Last Night Productions - a film,
television and theatre production company, as a vehicle for
their own creative work. They have been working as
producers, actors, writers, editors and directors on both
corporate and creative projects since.
In 2010 Jess
and Carl returned to New Zealand where Jess played the role
of Tracey O in Super City, and more recently
she can be seen in Sione’s 2: Unfinished Business.
Carl is best known for his portrayal of the lead
role of Ben Wilson/Captain
X in Amazing Extraordinary Friends is currently appearing in Calendar Girls at The Court Theatre in Christchurch.
Jessica and Carl hope Takes will
earn a following back in New Zealand and are seeking
submissions by New Zealand short film makers.
