Can Do About It, by Chuck Collins, is the first major
book on inequality since the cry “We are the 99 Percent”
was raised on Wall Street
BOSTON,
April 2, 2012 – As the Occupy movement celebrates its
six-month anniversary, and as the 99% Spring effort begins
training 100,000 activists in nonviolent direct action, and
as protests are planned for Tax Day (April 17) and May Day
(May 1), a new, super-accessible book about inequality is
being published today. In plain language that everyone can
understand, the book informs the passion for equality
welling up across the country and addresses the key
frustrations spurring the current populist moment.
99 to 1: How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We Can Do About It, by Chuck Collins, is straightforward and down-to-earth as it explains the economic realities behind the cry, “We are the 99 percent!” It provides answers to the growing population of everyday Americans who are paying closer attention to this movement, people who are asking:
• Who are the 99 percent?
• Who are the
one percent?
• How extreme is inequality in different
areas of society?
• How are rules of the economy rigged
to benefit the one percent?
• Why is growing inequality
hard to stop?
• What can people do break the cycle of
growing inequality?
Chuck Collins knows inequality. He is
one of the world’s top writers, speakers, researchers, and
activists on the rise of inequality in our society and its
harmful effects. In 99 to 1, he brings together ideas
that have been developed through articles, reports,
websites, and street activism to give voice to the thoughts
and dreams of the movement.
Collins provides a revealing
picture of inequality in all realms of today’s world,
including individual wealth and power, corporate wealth and
power, media control, political influence, and public health
and social well being. He shows how inequality will continue
to grow unless policy makers are forced to change direction.
And he tells how people and groups are pushing back against
inequality and taking action to force the very changes that
will reduce inequality and create a world that works for the
many and not just the few.
