25 New Zealand Artists Show In New York
For the very first time the artwork of 25 contemporary New Zealand artists will be displayed in an exhibition of fine art at Agora Gallery in Chelsea from 24 April until 7 June 2012. The artwork is a collection from all across the country that represents the cultural diversity as well as demonstrates how various media can be brought together to highlight what is unique to New Zealand.
“This collection of work is an expression of what many New Zealanders love and can celebrate about its dynamic identity,” explains Flagstaff Gallery Director, Alka, in Auckland.
“Today, local artists embrace international influences from contemporary art while their expressions reveal their authentic visual heritage embedded within.
New Zealand artists stake their identity, of which a part is sometimes subtly or often overtly influenced from Maori. Visible alongside this lineage is the undeniably strong Pacific Island impact on the New Zealand landscape,” continues Alka.
From the vibrancy of colour and the immediacy of the pastels from Anna Palmer to the ‘Whare Taonga” – House of Treasures inspired woven pieces by Alexis Neal and to the complex symbolism in monotones from Fraser Williamson, and to the big, bold oil paintings by Sean Chen, the Chinese born New Zealander, unafraid in his lines and in his colour palette, this exhibition is a must see.
“Bringing New Zealand art to New York offers a rare opportunity to glimpse into the intimacy of everyday life in New Zealand, shaped by the magnificent isolation, a spirit of adventure and an ever present sense of humour.” concludes Alka. “This is an opportunity to experience art heritage like no other.”
On Wednesday 25 April, a Powhiri and a Wero, a traditional Maori welcome accompanied by a traditional challenge, will be performed live to commemorate ANZAC Day and open the 1st exhibition. The ceremony is from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th Street.
The Deputy Permanent Representative to The United Nations, Bernadette Cavanaugh is the special guest speaker.
A 2nd exhibition featuring the same 25 New Zealand artists begins on 17 May 2012 with the opening reception on Thurs 24 May. For a complete list of artists and more information, please visit www.flagstaff.co.nz.
