Banff Mountain Film Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary in New Zealand

2012 marks the tenth year the New Zealand Alpine Club (NZAC) has hosted the Banff Mountain Film Festival in New Zealand and to celebrate the anniversary the Club has expanded its nationwide screenings from ten to thirteen.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is a program of The Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada and is the largest and most prestigious mountain festival in the world. Hot on the heels of the primary festival held every autumn in Canada, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour hits the road.

With stops planned in about 390 communities and 35 countries across the globe, the 2012 tour features a collection of the most inspiring action, environmental, and adventure films from the festival. The NZAC plans to bring these films to Auckland (two screenings), Hamilton, Taupo, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wellington (two screenings), Nelson, Christchurch (two screenings), Dunedin (two screenings) and Queenstown. Palmerston North and Queenstown are new venues on the Festival calendar for 2012. The first screening is in New Plymouth on May 4.

The Festival never fails to bring New Zealanders up-close and personal with action sports, exotic landscapes and remote cultures in an exhilarating and provocative exploration of the mountain world, explains NZAC Event Co-ordinator and organiser of the New Zealand tour, Pat Deavoll “The films never fail to inspire.”

“From approximately 300 films entered into the annual festival, award-winning films and audience favourites are chosen to travel the globe,” she says. “The Kiwi feedback is invariably excellent and each year our audiences have grown. Last year approximately 7000 people saw the films, and this year with three additional screenings, we have the capacity for an extra 1000 to have this privilege.”
