South Island mentor supports trainees to achieve

Passion and commitment were the main reasons that Judith Taylor has been recognised as a true ambassador.

Judith Taylor, National Services Te Pairangi’s (NSTP) Museum Development Officer for the South Island was awarded the ATTTO Museum Training Ambassador Award last week.

Judith is a member of NSTP, a division of Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and is responsible for supporting and mentoring trainees in the museum sector throughout the South Island to achieve their goals. Judith has been working closely with ATTTO for the last three and a half years and has supported 11 of her colleagues to gain the National Certificate in Museum Practice.

ATTTO Chief Executive Kathy Wolfe says Judith’s commitment to a robust assessment with constructive feedback to trainees has assisted with the increase in the number of museum staff gaining recognition for their skills.

“Mentoring and supporting her colleagues through the training is an important element to ensure our trainees complete the training,” says Kathy Wolfe.

“Over the last three years ATTTO has increased the number of museums that we work with from 22 to 57. Judith has been a great ambassador throughout this journey and has been a consistent part of ensuring museum staff gain valuable skills. She definitely deserves to be the ATTTO Museum Ambassador for 2012.”

NSTP’s Acting General Manager Victoria Essen works closely with ATTTO to ensure the training is relevant.

“NSTP recognises the value of workplace training and is committed to supporting trainees over the country in achieving nationally recognised qualifications. Receiving the ATTTO Ambassador Award is a great honour for Judith and recognises the commitment she has to up-skilling the sector. People really like the opportunity to work on something they know will have a tangible qualification at the end of it,” says Victoria.

The National Certificate in Museums – Level 4 ensures that trainees have a common understanding of good museum practice and responsibilities required of organisations that hold collections and trust for communities. ATTTO has recently developed and released new training resources to assist with the learning required to complete the qualification.
