Sitka Celebrates New Zealand Music Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sitka Celebrates New Zealand Music Month

For the entire month of May, Sitka in Newmarket is playing host to some of New Zealand’s finest singer-songwriters who will be performing at Sitka’s weekly “Cabin Jams” every Friday.

Kicking off the first week on May 4th is Little Lapin, a solo project by Raglan based singer songwriter Lucy Cioffi. Little Lapin’s voice has been a point of distinction with comparisons to Laura Marling and Joni Mitchell with the Waikato Times announcing,"Lucy Cioffi's voice sounds almost like a young Sinead O'Connor" (Tracey Cooper 2011).

Week two is being rolled out with an acoustic session by Phil Edwards, lead singer/songwriter for his self titled Phil Edwards Band. Hailing from Hawke’s bay the Phil Edwards has a distinctive summer feel to his soulful songs which range from warm acoustic ballads reminiscent of Jack Johnson through to blues numbers with a John Mayer / Ben Harper feel. Phil has recently wound up a string of performances following the Hyundai New Zealand Longboard Tour across the summer.

Thomas Oliver from Wellington’s The Thomas Oliver Band will be playing a very special solo acoustic set around midday of Friday the 18th of May. Gaining rapid momentum in New Zealand’s music scene, The Thomas Oliver Band boasts a strong instrumentation including lap-slide guitar, baritone sax and double bass giving a unique and full energy sound which has seem them supporting the likes of Joe Cocker, Cold Chisel, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Gin Wigmore.

The final Cabin Jam for May 2012 is being held by Hokianga born Edward Waaka. Edward Waaka is a songwriter who’s lyrics are consciously direct and musically uplifting. Having started and developed an 8 piece band called The Rooftop Collective in 2009, his diverse sound blurs the boundaries of conventional music and crosses formats as haunting melodies grow into a seamless, colourful works of sound. Mixing stirring vocal with emotive song writing skills, Waaka’s music represents the beauty of the everyday.
