Young musos
offered workshops with top New Zealand musicians
ROTORUA 10.05.12: Aspiring young local musicians are being encouraged to register for a music clinic next week as part of Rotorua District Council’s (RDC) New Zealand Music Month and Youth Week celebrations.
RDC community arts officer Kiri Jarden has teamed up with Richard Anaru of Waiariki Institute of Technology’s Academy of Music and Singing, and Rotorua Lakes High School, to offer young musicians and songwriters the opportunity to work with some of the country’s top music talent.
Clinics are being offered in bass with Rob Paterson (OMC, She Just Greedy); guitar with Ben Fulton (founder of Red Witch Analog Pedals); songwriting with Jan Hellriegel (singer, general manager Native Tongue Publishing); drummer Mickey Ututaonga (She Just Greedy, and has performed with Nathan Haines); and percussionist Michael Barker (has performed with NZ Symphony Orchestra, John Butler Trio).
“These are some of New Zealand’s best musicians,” says Ms Jarden. “It’s a great opportunity for participants to learn new skills from these musos, advance their understanding of songwriting and performing, and their awareness of careers in the music industry.
“Spaces are limited so people will need to get in quickly and pre register. “
The clinics are on Saturday 19 May at Rotorua Lakes High School from 10am to 4.30pm. The programme is open to 15 to 24 year olds and costs $5.
