Cultural Slam celebrates talents of young people in Gisborne
Cultural Slam celebrates talents of young people in Gisborne during Youth Week
The diverse cultures and talents of youth in the Gisborne region are set to be showcased during Youth Week at the Cultural Slam on Tuesday 22nd May.
The event kicks off at 4.30pm with an Art Exhibition at the Lytton High School art department, created by the students of the acclaimed department. From there, the Cultural Slam begins at 6pm. An uplifting three hour live spectacular split into three sessions, with a huge line-up of local youth dancers, bands, pasifika and maori groups, drama groups plus a whole lot of fun!
Event Co-Producer, Jayson Kingsbeer says the Cultural Slam is an excellent fit with the national Youth Week theme of ‘Love the Skin you’re in’.
“Gisborne has a diverse range of cultures and youth with different talents. The youth performing at the Cultural Slam have taken advantage of their culture and talents, developing them and ‘loving the skin they’re in’. Our event aims to highlight the different ways Tairawhiti youth have embraced their culture, heritage and differences (their skin) and to encourage all youth to do the same.”
Among those performing on the night are the regional award winning, Campion College Shakespeare in Schools group and the National Secondary Schools Kapa Haka group winners, Te Roopu o Rangatahi o Ritana - amongst a plethora of other youth acts. The high calibre of acts registering this year have far outweighed the expectations of the volunteer organisers.
“We’re really thrilled to be able to put such a variety of performances on show to the Gisborne community” says Co-Producer, Stacey Tangaere.
Ms Tangaere pays homage to her team of dedicated youth volunteers, who have put in a huge amount of effort leading up to the Cultural Slam and she says “they’ll be working just as hard on the night”.
Thanks to the generous support of the Ministry of Youth Development and Arataiohi, the coordinators of Youth Week nationwide - the Cultural Slam is expected to one of the biggest Youth Week events Gisborne has seen.
Doors open for the Cultural Slam at 5.30pm at the Lytton High School hall. Gold Coin Entry.
