NZAC Artist in Residence’s work up for auction

New Zealand Alpine Club Artist in Residence’s work up for auction.

The New Zealand Alpine Club (NZAC) is auctioning a major painting by its first Artist in Residence, Dean Buchanan.

The well-known Auckland artist painted Cinerama Col from Nuns Veil during his tenure at Unwin Lodge at Mount Cook Village in February, 2012.
Dean donated the work to the NZAC for the purposes of fundraising.
New Zealand Alpine Club General Manager Sam Newton said it is a chance for the public to purchase a major work from one of New Zealand's leading contemporary artists.

Sam says one normally associates Dean Buchanan with bush scenes and seascapes, particularly around the artist’s beloved Karekare.

“But for the last seven years Dean has also been actively climbing in the South Island including ascents of Mts Earnslaw, Aspiring and Cook,” Sam said.
“His love of the high alpine world has generated an interest in mountain landscape painting. This piece is possibly the best example of his work in this genre,” he said.

Cinerama Col from Nuns Veil carries the classic Dean Buchanan traits of vivid colours and an aggressive angular style. It is a large piece of artwork at 1500mm wide by 1020mm high and demands the attention of the viewer.
The work can be viewed at the New Zealand Alpine Club’s Home of Mountaineering building in Christchurch.

It will be auctioned on TradeMe from 25 June to 16 July and can be viewed at http://trade.me/nzalpineclub

“Connoisseurs and collectors alike will recognise this for what it is - a valuable opportunity to own a magnificent Dean Buchanan original of their own,” Sam said.
