Kiwi shearers head for Ireland after Yorkshire washout

The New Zealand shearing team have packed their bags for Ireland after missing their latest competition because tof he unprecedented washout of the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, England.

Weeks of rain culminated in a heavy downpour on Tuesday, making access to parking areas and many other parts of the showgrounds impossible and forcing a decision to call the show to an end after just one day - the first cancellation because of bad weather since the show was first held in 1838.

More than 12,000 entries had been received across the multiple classes of the show which was expected to attract over 130,000 people over its three days.

The Kiwi shearing team of John Kirkpatrick, of Napier, and Nathan Stratford, of Invercargill, will next compete at the Rickamore Shears in Northern Ireland this weekend, ahead of four shows in Wales, including the Royal Welsh Show which is expected to attract well over 200,000 people.
