Cheers, Chairs – an art
exhibition by Fluke
Fluke (aka Andy Dunn) has
recently emerged as a very promising upcoming artists (a
finalist at many exhibitions such as the Walker & Hall
Waiheke Art Award 2009 & 2011 and the COCA Anthony Harper
Contemporary Art Award 2009), his steady progress and hard
work now sees him presenting his latest series of
prints.
His solo exhibition Cheers, Chairs, which starts on 1 August 2012, presents eight artworks in a strikingly simplistic exhibition drawn largely from the collection of chairs. Not just a homophone, Cheers, Chairs sees Fluke’s imagination and aspiration presented through the humble form of the chair, mixed in with the use of intricate textured backgrounds and wallpapers and randomly placed objects.
This solo work is largely concerned with the balance of object and environment. It sees Fluke step into new subject territory, setting aside his usual architecture inspired compositions that have dominated his style over recent years and instead turn to the domestic familiarity and simplicity of a chair for inspiration.
There is poignancy in Fluke’s serene pictures. At first glance they seem arbitrary; a slice of life domestic images. But on closer inspection, the elements allude to an environment that is alive and breathing, evolving and interacting with the present.
Fluke says that turning chairs into art has been an exploration that has seen him developing interesting situations that have been defined by the amalgamation of the individual elements into an on-going narrative.
“I enjoy
the method of processing the different parts of a piece; the
subjects, title, mood, colour etc and moulding them into a
cohesive and engaging story, this is where magical realism
allows me to step outside the realms of reality and suggest
the impossible,” says Fluke.
This is his
third solo exhibition in Wellington. Over the past few
years, Fluke has competed in national and international art
and design competitions with notable success. He was a
finalist in the ‘To Death with a Smile’ poster
completion (with over 1100 entries from around the world)
held at the Mexico Institute of Design, and twice as a
finalist for the Walker & Hall Waiheke Award.
Later this year, Fluke plans to travel to Portugal where he will reside while finishing off a collection of short stories for his first book.
The exhibition runs from 1 August to 31 August at the Southern Cross Restaurant and Garden Bar, 39 Able Smith Street, Te Aro, Wellington.
