Wellington women cycle to Auckland for breast cancer charity
Wellington women cycle to Auckland to help New
Zealanders with breast cancer
This
Saturday 15 September, five women will take to the streets
of Wellington to raise public awareness of those New
Zealanders living with secondary breast cancer (also known
as advanced or metastatic) and collect donations for Sweet
Louise (www.sweetlouise.co.nz), a charitable
Trust with the unique mission of helping to improve the
quality of life for New Zealanders living with secondary,
incurable breast cancer.
Jenni Drew and her friends will ride down Cuba Street, encouraging people to meet them and support their Sweet Louise 'Sweet Cycle Challenge' where they hope to raise $10,000 for the charity. They will be by the bucket fountain from 10.00 am until 6.00 with the tandem which anyone can have a go on.
The women will cycle from Otaki on 2 November and have five days to reach Auckland in time for the Radiohead concert at Vector Arena on Tuesday 6 November. Accommodation and support has been donated along the way by local businesses and individuals and they are seeking pledges of support through their Fundraise online page at http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/sweetcyclechallenge .
"I have seen firsthand through my work the incredible difference the charity makes to people with secondary breast cancer," says Jenni Drew, organiser of the ride. "Over 2700 New Zealand women and men are diagnosed with primary breast cancer every year and for about 400 of these people, the cancer will spread to other parts of the body, progressing to secondary stage. The cancer is incurable at this advanced stage and is managed by ongoing treatments."
Sweet Louise provides support and services to improve the quality of life for women and men living with secondary breast cancer by offering Members a range of free complementary therapies, support and services to enhance their well-being and help them live as positively as possible, for as long as possible.
