Auckland Youth Orchestra brings the city to life
In lead up to Auckland Youth Orchestra’s final concert of 2012 downtown Auckland will be transformed into an open air theatre on 2nd October.
Over 50 members from the orchestra will perform at the corner of Queen Street and Customs Street outside Downtown Westfield for 15 minutes beginning at 8.40am.
The spectacle aims to ignite a passion for classical music amongst Aucklanders and to showcase the musical talent that will be performing at the Town Hall this Friday.
It will be an interactive experience for the public with chances to tweet for a treat for prizes, including passes to the Friday concert.
In-line with the “From Russia with Love” theme, the orchestra will be wearing Russian hats and will be performing music from The Nutcracker and The Radetzky March.
AYO’s final concert of the year, Celebration – From Russia with Love, will feature music from Mozart, Guilmant, Shostakovich and a world premiere of a piece by their in-house composer, Robbie Ellis.
The concert will take place at the Auckland Town Hall on Friday 5th October at 7.30pm and will feature the recently restored organ.
Auckland Youth Orchestra was founded in 1948 and was the first youth orchestra in Australasia. Its aim is to bridge the gap between school and professional orchestras and since its inception over 2500 youth have passed through it. Its members are between the ages of 14 and 26 and with 14 concerts each year no other orchestral organisation in New Zealand provides such a comprehensive programme for this age group.
