New Zealand Babywearing Week: Hundreds of Kiwi Families to Celebrate in October
Over $6,000 in prizes to be shared among event attendees.
Volunteers from Kerikeri to Dunedin are organising events to celebrate New Zealand and International Babywearing Week from 6-14 October with over 20 events happening around the country. Babywearing Week has been celebrated in New Zealand since 2009 and Kiwi families are welcome to join the celebrations for an opportunity to win a share of over $6,000 worth of prizes thanks to New Zealand Babywearing Week sponsors. Experienced babywearers will be in attendance at all events to provide assistance to participating families if needed and to promote safe babywearing.
Babywearing Wellington is organising its third annual 'Sling Walk' on Sunday 14 October. Families are invited to meet at Frank Kitts Park from 12.45pm to register for a 1.30pm start. The first 50 families to register will receive a goodie bag and every participating family will go into the main prize draw. The walk will take in the Wellington waterfront, Courtenay Place and Cuba Mall, ending at the Southern Cross Garden Bar in Te Aro for nibbles and the prize draw courtesy of New Zealand Babywearing Week sponsors. In the event of wet weather, registration will take place in the Te Papa foyer. Updates and information in the lead up to the Wellington event will be shared on the Babywearing Wellington Facebook page. All family members are welcome to this free event.
The theme for Babywearing Week this year is ‘Carrying on Traditions’. Although many people believe that babywearing is a new concept, New Zealand families, like families around the world, have a long tradition of meeting their own and their children’s needs by ‘wearing’ their babies and toddlers securely in baby carriers and slings.
Babywearing is a valuable skill and parenting tool which has many benefits for young children including decreasing crying by up to 50%; enhancing brain development, nurturing baby’s sense of security and meeting their need to be held. Babywearing also benefits parents and caregivers, including allowing them to more easily and comfortably care for their children, while keeping their hands free to attend to the tasks of everyday living.
