Roy Morgan Research launches ‘The Digital Universe New Zealand'

Roy Morgan Research has been tracking digital media, like Facebook, for more than 10 years. As more technologies emerge and are adopted with ever increasing rapidity by the new ‘Connected Consumer’ the time has come to connect all the dots. The Digital Universe is the latest report from Roy Morgan Research that connects the myriad of digital technologies, providing a 360 degree view of the new Digital Universe and how the exponentially expanding range of touchpoints is affecting New Zealanders’ daily lives - their media consumption, shopping habits, socialisation and expectations.

Most New Zealanders socialise online

The majority of New Zealanders aged 14+ years are now using some form of social media. Having monitored Facebook for over five years, Roy Morgan Research also reports that over half of New Zealanders (56%) use Facebook in an average four weeks. These findings are from ‘The Digital Universe’ report, recently released by Roy Morgan Research.

Currently visited by 2 million New Zealanders in an average four weeks, Facebook began as a messaging and photo sharing website. It has since evolved into a full, multi-media environment for gaming, communication and information seeking and sharing, which dominates the social media sphere.

However social media is much more than just Facebook; there are a number of other fast-growing forms of social media that are rapidly catching up.

For example, Google+ currently has 260,000 visitors (7% of New Zealanders 14+) in an average four week period, which represents an increase of 20% over the last six months. Only 6% of New Zealanders 14+ visit Twitter in an average four weeks, indicating that Twitter is still an ‘early adopter’ phenomenon. Twitter’s growth, however, continues and has increased 31% in the last 12 months.

“Social media is now mainstream, with the majority of New Zealanders now using some form of social media.

“New Zealanders are also using a variety of devices (other than just PCs) to access social media. In fact, in an average 4 weeks 27% of Smartphone owners use their phone for social networking.

“Given this, it is important for New Zealand businesses to understand — at the very minimum — which social networks their customers are using and what they are doing on them. Roy Morgan’s New Technology Adoption Segmentation can help marketers more accurately target New Zealanders with the highest propensity to purchase products in their category.”

Aussies prefer New Zealand for holidays

More Australians (12.9%) nominate New Zealand as their preferred overseas holiday destination for a short-haul trip than any other destination. Although still Number One, this has continued to decline from its peak of 15.1% prior to the Christchurch earthquake in February 2011, according to the Roy Morgan Holiday Tracking Survey for September 2012.

Fiji and other South Pacific Islands such as Vanuatu are also favoured destinations, with 8.0% of Australians wanting to holiday there, up from 5.5% in March 2001 but down slightly from a high of 8.6% in March 2011.

5.3% of Australians would like to holiday in Bali, which is around the same level as in March 2001, but this has fluctuated over the past ten years, with steep declines after the two Bali bombing incidents in 2002 and 2005.

Compared to March 2001 more Australians would now like to holiday in Thailand (5.9%) or Singapore (3.4%). Australians’ preference for Thailand has steadily increased over the last 18 months.

Jane Ianniello, International Director of Tourism, Travel & Leisure, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“Considering the devastating effect that natural disasters, terrorism, or political unrest can have on a nation’s tourism industry, New Zealand’s popularity with Australians is holding up quite well considering the Christchurch earthquake only last year.

“Bali is another example: after the 2002 and 2005 Bali bombings, the appeal of Bali fell precipitously among Australian holidaymakers. It remains to be seen whether the recently reported terrorist threat on the tenth anniversary of the 2002 Bali bombing will once again dent the appeal of Bali as a preferred holiday destination for Australians.

“It is important for the travel industry to understand the demographics, attitudes and behavioural profile of these potential holidaymakers, in order to tailor appropriate messages that are likely to motivate them to book their holiday.”
