Meow opens its doors to Latin Club: a weekly show that congregates the Wellington community around Latin Music and Culture.
Latin Music is a generic term; tremendous diversity is lost behind this label.
Dozens of countries were influenced by “Latin culture.” They speak “Neo-Latin” languages - each having specific cultural mixes and traditions. They are spread all over the world. The “Latin music” of each place may then be uniquely influenced by Indigenous, African, Arabic, Caucasian and other cultures.
So Latin Club explores music in a Pan-Latin sense: across the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Latin Europe (Portugal, Spain, France and Italy) and African countries influenced by Latin culture, such as Cabo Verde and Mozambique.
Latin Club wants to bring Latin culture to audiences and musicians; by promoting collaborations among musicians from diverse backgrounds (traditional and authentic) and music influences (new fusions and mixtures). This will generate new ways of performing in New Zealand.
Alda Rezende - Brazilian singer and world music radio dj - and Scottish drummer and composer John Rae will host the event. Completing the band are Argentine accordionist Emilio Bertrand, guitarist Noel Clayton and double bassist Patrick Bleakley. Every week they will have a special guest from the Latin communities and local musicians exploring the world of Latin Music.
On its second session – 26th of March – Latin Club welcomes:
Clube do Choro: love of music brought together a group of friends from Brazil, France and Aotearoa to explore the first genuine Brazilian rhythm “Choro”. Dating from late 19th century, “Choro” pre-dates Samba and Bossa Nova, and is a Brazilian fusion of European music and African influenced rhythms. Clube do Choro interprets this original music style and puts its spin into some of the great Brazilian classics.
