Bayfair and Baypark Partnership Revives Outdoor Movie Night

Bayfair and Baypark Partnership Revives Popular Outdoor Movie Night

Tauranga residents are set to experience a unique outdoor event that recreates the classic American movie experience when the hugely popular Baypark Drive-In Movie Festival returns to the area in the April school holidays.

The drive-in movie experience will take place over six nights from 30 April to 5 May at ASB Baypark. Movie-goers will enjoy the films projected onto a 36 meter wide screen on the side of the arena while tuning into the soundtrack via a specific radio frequency. The event also includes waitresses on roller skates serving popcorn and hotdogs directly to cars.

Headlining the festival is a fully themed evening screening of Grease, with the remaining line-up to be announced over the coming weeks. To close the festival on Sunday 5 May, the public will be invited to vote for the movie they would most like to see for the people’s choice night.

The event, which debuted in 2011, will feature a line-up of well-loved movies including kids’ movies and horror movies complimented by roller derby girls in scary make-up, all while capturing the nostalgic American drive-in experience.

It is a collaborative effort between Bayfair and ASB Baypark who are working in partnership to help grow the area as the region’s biggest entertainment destination. For Bayfair it is about creating an experience for the community to enjoy. Bayfair marketing manager Louise Chapman says, “Bayfair is proud to have one of the biggest outdoor movie experiences on our back doorstep. This is something that the whole community can be involved in and we are excited to be bringing this great event back to the people of Tauranga.”
