Wellington Wins National Hip Hop Dance Title

MEDIA RELEASE:

Wellington Wins National Hip Hop Dance Title

April 28, 2013

It's official – Wellington hip hop dance is the best in the country!

The Company NZ made history for Wellington Hip Hop Dance by winning the Mega Crew division at the National Street Dance Championships in Auckland on Saturday 26 April 2013. This is the first National tittle for Wellington since the competition started in 2007 which has been dominated by crews from Auckland.

The National Street Dance Championship is sanctioned by Hip Hop International based in Los Angeles. More than fifty crews took part in the competition throughout the country, which started with regional qualifiers in March 2013. Children as young as 7 years to 30 year olds competed at the event, all vying to realize their dream to represent New Zealand at the World Hip Hop Dance Championship in Las Vegas in August 2013.

The Company NZ is a Wellington based dance academy in Kilbirnie. It is governed by Springboard Arts Trust, an organization that helps provide an environment for youth to grow life skills, learn and achieve their dreams through the process of learning to dance. The dancers who were part of the championship winning team are from various parts of Wellington city, as far as Porirua, Kapiti and Lower Hutt.

"It's the best feeling knowing that we not only achieved first place for The Company NZ, but for Wellington. This is huge because it tells people that Wellington is the place to be for hip hop and it's the heart of street dance now. I've had so many people say that they want to move to Wellington for dance now, it's awesome!" says Ben Uili – Choreographer and Artistic Director, the man behind the winning routine who has been a key figure in growing the talent in Wellington.

The Company NZ also had further success by winning 2 silver medals in the Junior and Adult 8 man crew division. Dancers from these crews will now also advance to represent New Zealand at the World Hip Hop Dance Competition in Las Vegas.
