Gallery’s Tenth Birthday Celebrations Fun For Everyone

Christchurch Art Gallery has planned a series of fun community events to celebrate its tenth birthday and the launch of its Populate! programme.

The celebrations will start on Saturday 11 May with a full day of events including artist talks, guided exhibition tours, a free concert featuring New Zealand music legend David Kilgour and local stars Delaney Davidson and The Eastern, and an ‘Imagination Playground’ for children. Events will also be held on Sunday 12 May, with the majority based outside the Gallery’s newest exhibition space at 209 Tuam Street (above C1 Espresso).

Populate! is an extension of the Gallery’s award-winning Outer Spaces programme of art in the city. Comprising 20 exhibitions and presentations throughout the city, Populate! marks a decade since the opening of Christchurch Art Gallery, and aims to bring faces and figures – as well as bursts of humour and strangeness – to the depopulated central city.

Gallery director Jenny Harper says the Populate! programme has something for everyone – from lovers of art to families seeking something to entertain the kids.

“We may not be able to host people in our building, but we still want to acknowledge this milestone and keep bringing art to the people of Christchurch. Populate! aims to help bring some vibrancy and energy back to central Christchurch. We’d like to invite everyone to come in and take a look.”

Some of the exciting artists involved in Populate! include Tony Oursler, Jess Johnson, Ronnie van Hout, Mark Braunias, Peter Stichbury and Gregor Kregor – amongst others.

Free parking will be available close to the community events at two Wilson Parking car parks, located at 226 Tuam Street, and the old Turners and Growers site on Tuam Street, between Madras and Barbadoes Street. Parking outside C1 Espresso is for customers only.
