Personal is Political – Call for Submissions

Personal is Political – Call for Submissions

The phrase ‘the personal is political’ was a frequently heard feminist battle cry of the 1960s and 1970s with many second-wave feminists exploring the ideas it encapsulates in their discussions. The ‘political’ of this phrase isn’t a narrow definition that refers to electoral politics but instead is a broader notion that has to do with power relationship and as the phrase suggests our individual involvement with them. While the Woman’s Movement and the feminists of the 1960s and 1970s who drove it made significant progress in fighting for change, systems of power are still a dominant force in the live of almost everyone today.

We are looking for submissions for a group exhibition that will run for two weeks in June. This exhibition will focus on works that seek to highlight, illuminate and demonstrate how systems of powers are at work today.

Works in any media will be considered. If you think your work fits into this theme please get in touch. There will be an inclusion fee for this exhibition that will include promotion, posters and an opening night event for the show. If you are interested please submit images to caleb@matchboxstudios.co.nz
