Hawkes Bay Readers and Writers Festival
The Writers in Wineries Charitable Trust, organisers of the Hawke’s Bay Readers and Writers Festival, has made the decision not to go ahead as planned with the June public programme due to a significant funding shortfall.
Carla Crosbie, chairperson, says that many organisations are finding funding tough at the moment.
“While this is disappointing for all involved we are still absolutely committed to bringing top quality literary talent to the Bay for the enjoyment and engagement of our community.”
The Trust hopes to stage the planned events – or variations of them – spaced out over the next 12 to 18 months. A planned schools event at Karamu High School will go ahead featuring local writers Anna MacKenzie, Adele Broadbent, Aaron Topp and Mary-anne Scott as originally scheduled.
Trustee and writer Lizzie Russell says that spacing events out, rather than grouping them together over a single weekend may actually suit the audience better.
“The writers involved have all been very supportive and are willing to attend rescheduled events. So watch this space – we’ll be back soon!”
The schools event at Karamu High School will take place on Friday, June 14.
