'...breathtakingly inventive’ - Theatreview

Following a critically acclaimed Northland Youth Theatre season, that left audiences beaming, Odyssey and it's creators, Company of Giants(Laurel Devenie and Katy Maudlin), immerse a group of young Auckland theatre makers into a re-imagining of Homer’s epic 'The Odyssey'. Odyssey is a theatrical explosion of people, surprise, joy, adventure and epic storytelling. Moving through intimate modes of storytelling to large scale chorus work and Greek tragedy, this production explores a myriad of theatrical elements  resulting a multi layered, relevant, accessible, heartbreaking, immersive reinvention of this ancient source, embedded with Greek mythology.

As Odysseus struggles home from the Trojan War, battling angry gods, lustrous goddesses, foreboding prophecies, and eventually the death of his crew, his son Telemachus battles the dilemma of an absent parent, and must go on his own journey to discover his history and track down the father he never met. Penelope, his wife waits in a decaying household, restlessly hoping for news of her husband, or a sign that he’ll be coming back. Odysseyexamines the personal human dilemmas of the effect of war, following one’s destiny, engaging with one’s whakapapa and examining the spiritual connection with one’s home. With an expansive cast of young adults and smaller primary children will bring you this ancient tale of extremes and endurance.

There will be shipwrecks and sirens, battles and bicycles...this is an Odyssey unlike any you've been on.

You bring the boat: we’ll bring the storm.

Completely accessible…vibrant with energy and imagination. It is life-affirming on so many levels – and it is joyous.’ - Theatreview
