Remarkables Park brings fun to Queenstown Winter Festival

Media Release from the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival

Remarkables Park brings new fun, family-friendly events to Winter Festival line-up

Queenstown’s Remarkables Park will be abuzz with an array of fun-filled events -- an eclectic mix of old favourites and new experiences - as part of the 39th American Express Queenstown Winter Festival later this month.

As the newest bronze sponsor of the ten-day festival, officially marking the start of winter in Queenstown, Remarkables Park has added some fantastic new events to the schedule including two drive-in movies and an exciting evening of music and entertainment.

Remarkables Park Communications and Projects Manager Olivia Porter said she was “delighted” to bring some “new, fun and family-friendly” events to the line-up.

"Queenstown Winter Festival is the perfect way to celebrate the start of winter,” said Ms Porter.

“It’s a privilege to be able to support the Festival with a unique mix of new events and some locals’ favourites.

“As a family-orientated company we pride ourselves on providing an array of activities that support our local community, offering fun and laughter for all ages. To do this as part of the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest winter celebration makes it even more special.”

Alt-folk outfit Bond Street Bridge will present ‘The Explorers Club: Antarctica Show’, an award-winning multimedia performance combining music, spoken-word, storytelling, and multimedia projections.

Described as “a perfect evening of music” by the Dominion Post, it will be held at the Remarkables Red Barn at 7.30pm on Thursday 27 June. Tickets at $20 a head are available from www.winterfestival.co.nz.

Following on from the success of its summer open-air movie nights, Remarkables Park has invested in a large outdoor movie screen and will host a drive-in movie extravaganza on Friday 28 June.

With the stunning backdrop of The Remarkables mountain range, movie-goers are encouraged to wrap up warm, relax and get cosy in the car with the family to watch the heart-breaking movie Eight Below, which starts at 6pm.

Keeping with the winter theme, Cool Runnings, the hilarious movie about the Jamaican bobsled team, starts at 9pm. A great one for reminiscing about ‘the old days’, retro ski gear is optional but fun. Food and refreshments will be available at both showings and the price is $20 per car, per movie.

Festival Director Lisa Buckingham said she was “delighted” to be able to bring some “new and exciting events” at Remarkables Park for this year’s American Express Queenstown Winter Festival.

“We always want to keep the festival current with new additions every year and it’s exciting to have some new experiences as part of the line-up. We look forward to a long and continued partnership with Remarkables Park,” said Lisa.

Due to last year’s success, the popular Mid-Winter Markets at the Remarkables Red Barn, a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike, will be back again on June 22 and 29.

Last year over 64 stalls including a wide variety of local food, artisans and crafts attracted more than 2,000 visitors. Shoppers browsed books, crafts and clothing while sampling fantastic local produce.

Already more than 40 stalls have signed up for this year’s markets, including lots of tasty hot food  to keep shoppers warm such as Grant Jackson’s bacon butties, Eat Humble Pies’ mouth-watering pies, Zamora’s delicious chorizo and steak sandwiches, pumpkin soup, porridge, and mulled wine.

Gates open at 10am and there will be plenty to keep keen shoppers entertained until 3pm, including youngsters who can enjoy free face painting and bouncy castles.

“Many of our summer stallholders are already committed and are excited to once again display their goods to locals and visitors during Festival time,” said Ms Porter.

“There’s definitely a distinctly wintery festival atmosphere and with music from Craig Smith and Marc Hamilton it promises to be yet another great market day.”
