Mt Hutt to re-open tomorrow after record snow fall

A very tired Mt Hutt crew are looking forward to a good night’s sleep before welcoming skiers and boarders back onto the slopes tomorrow (Tuesday June 25).

Conditions are expected to be “as good as it gets” with a snow base of over three metres across the mountain and all main trails groomed for opening. Ski Patrol has made the slopes within the ski area safe, but outside the ski area boundary there’s still “considerable danger” of uncontrolled avalanches.

“It’s vital that everyone respects the ski area boundary that’s clearly marked around the slopes,” said Mt Hutt ski area manager James McKenzie.

“It would be absolute madness to cross any ropes out there given what we’ve seen in the last few days.

“Our crew have worked very hard to make it safe up here and we’d like to think everyone will respect all signs and ropes and stay within the patrolled ski area.”

The Triple Chair lift that was damaged by yesterday’s avalanche will be out of action for some time and it will be three to four weeks before the extent of the damage can be fully assessed and a time frame set for repair.

“We’ve had a great deal of support from the ski and snowboard community through social media and we understand they’re anxious to know what’s happening with the lift,” said Mr McKenzie.

“We’ll let everyone know what we plan to do as soon as we can, but it’s going to take some time so please continue to be patient.”
