Destination Queenstown welcomes return of NZ Golf Open

Destination Queenstown welcomes return of NZ Golf Open

Destination Queenstown today welcomed the news that the New Zealand Open would return to Queenstown in 2014 and would include the pro-am format successfully established for the 2013 NZPGA Championship.

“We wholeheartedly support the move to make Queenstown the hub for this new-format event and congratulate New Zealand Golf, the PGA of New Zealand and Michael Hill Tournaments Limited for their work and vision in pooling resources to form New Zealand’s premier golf tournament,” said Destination Queenstown CEO Graham Budd.

“Queenstown and Arrowtown will provide the perfect backdrop for this high profile event, offering visitors world-class facilities, multi award-winning courses, spectacular lake and alpine scenery, and a diverse range of golfing and non-golfing activity options. It’s a huge opportunity for us to shine on a world stage.

“This new combined event is a culmination of The Hills golf course successfully hosting three New Zealand Opens and two NZPGA Championships over the last six years. We’re also delighted that the potential for amateur and professional participation is expanding with the addition of Millbrook Resort as tournament co-host.”

Destination Queenstown has been focussing on promoting Queenstown as a world-class golf destination for several years and Mr Budd believes hosting New Zealand’s premier tournament will further grow the reach of this proposition, particularly in Australian, Japanese and other Asian markets.

“The new partnership agreement between MHTL and the Japanese Golf Tour Organisation will enhance our profile in the Japanese market which is targeted by New Zealand’s tourism industry for growth,” he said.
