Temple for Christchurch Set to Burn

Temple Set to Burn

The Temple for Christchurch, an art installation and community mental health project, is set to burn. The all volunteer-built installation will be open to the public from September 1 - 14 at the site of the former Convention Centre and will go up in flames on September 21 at the Motukarara Racecourse.

The installation's design is based on the seismic waveforms recorded during the major earthquake on February 22, 2011. It will span 40m by 25m, reaching 6.3m at its highest point to reflect the 6.3 magnitude of the quake, and its walls are clad with thinly cut demolition materials.

"The installation takes an art therapy approach to the collective experience we have all been through. People will be invited to write about their earthquake experiences, or anything else they wish to let go of, on its walls" said artist and project lead Hippathy Valentine.

After September 14 the Temple will be transported out of the city to meet its fiery end. "The Temple is a cathartic experience, providing a tangible way for people to purge the experiences written on its walls through fire" said Hippathy.

Hippathy and a crew of dedicated volunteers have been working tirelessly to bring the Temple to completion and with less than six weeks to go before the Temple opens to the public, excitement levels are mounting at the central city site.

The Temple for Christchurch Trust is running an online charity auction, through Trade Me, beginning on August 1. They are currently soliciting donations for this cause. All money received will be used to fund the final burn event.
