National Secondary Schools Tournament Day Three
PRESS RELEASE
NATIONAL SECONDARY
SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT
DAY THREE
Auckland, New Zealand September 4, 2013 – As day three dawned 16 teams had at least one win, with eight (St Paul’s, Tokoroa, Otahuhu, Mt Albert, Kelston, Rotorua, James Cook and St Thomas) having won two from two.
Of the eight without a win, four faced each other (Aorere v Westlake & Southland v Rosehill) and it was Westlake & Rosehill who went through to the semi’s with a win each on the board. For the other four it was a much tougher day, as Taita, Henderson, Tu Toa and Howick had to face four of the as yet unbeaten teams. Of these Howick were the team to find a little something extra and they too will head into the semi finals with a win under their belts. Day three also saw the first draw of the tournament with Northcote & Whangarei sharing a 16 all draw.
It was a tougher day for the kickers with the ball heading over the sideline on the full more than usual due to a strong wind blowing across the grounds. Teams which could adjust their play and keep their passes short had the most success. Fortunately the forecast rain stayed away until after the final hooter and good crowds were sideline to support their teams. There was an especially vocal crowd cheering on the host school Papakura as they secured a late 24-16 win over fellow South Auckland school, Southern Cross Campus.
Heading into the semi finals, only four teams remain unbeaten in the Premiership Grade (St Paul's, Otahuhu, Mt Albert and Kelston) while in the Developing Grade Rotorua Boys are the only team to finish three from three and the visitors from Invercargill from Southland Boys have yet to get their first win.
