Cadbury Dunedin Marathon runs into its 35th year!

Cadbury Dunedin Marathon runs into its 35th year!

Runners across the country are gearing up for the 35th Cadbury Dunedin Marathon that will be run on September 8th.

The Cadbury Dunedin Marathon which is made up of the marathon, a half marathon and a recreational walk was established in 1979 and is one of the most scenic Marathons in New Zealand. It starts close to the Albatross Colony on the Otago Peninsula, around the beautiful Otago Harbour before finishing at Watson Park, Port Chalmers. This is the 26th year that Cadbury has sponsored the iconic Dunedin Marathon.

Iaan Buchanan, General Manager of Marketing at Cadbury, believes the sponsorship of the marathon is a great way to support the community and also gives people an opportunity to challenge themselves.

“It is a real opportunity for people to give the run a go, whether it is the full, half or even the walk it is a great way to set and achieve some goals with the added bonus of raising money for charities that people care about,” said Iaan.

TVNZ Reporter Max Bania is going to run the Marathon in his father’s memory and use it as an opportunity to raise money for cancer research. Ken Bania, Max’s father ran 14 marathons but sadly died in April after a 16-year battle with follicular lymphoma.

When Mr Bania signed up for the Dunedin Marathon, to be held on September 8, his father was his main motivation. He hoped to raise money for cancer research, as well as Dunedin Hospital, where his father was treated for many years.

“I can honestly say I’ve never been more determined to do something in my life. Raising money to help future cancer sufferers felt like a good thing to do. I had always enjoyed running, but had never taken it too seriously so this is a great challenge,” said Max.

Mr Bania wanted others to know that almost anyone could run a marathon and it was about starting to train with small reachable goals and not making drastic changes overnight.

Donations for the cancer fundraiser to the Dunedin Hospital and Cancer Society Otago can be made to the Ken Bania Appeal Account, BNZ 02 0948 0290006 25.
