2013 Pikihuia Awards

And the Winner is ....

The long wait for the Pikihuia Awards finalists is almost over. On Saturday 14th September, the winners for the five categories of the Pikihuia Awards for Maori writers will be announced and the finalists from all over Aotearoa New Zealand have been invited to the event at Te Papa, Wellington to find out the result.

The finalists include Helen Waaka of Hawkes Bay, a previous winner in the Pikihuia Awards, as well as Jacquie McRae and Mark Sweet, previous finalists who have gone on to have their own novels published - The Scent of Apples and Zhu Mao respectively.

The finalists in both Best English and Best Māori Short Story categories and the Novel Extract category will have their stories published in HUIA Short Stories 10 which will be launched on Saturday, along with the latest novel BUGS by Whiti Hereaka, another previous Pikihuia Award winner.

HUIA Publisher's Managing Director Robyn Bargh was delighted with the enthusiastic response. 'I think this year shows another step in the growth of writers and their story-telling. We have been very pleased with the quality of the writing and are looking forward to launching the stories in the latest compilation HUIA Short Stories 10 at the Awards. We're also excited to launch Whiti's latest novel BUGS so it will be a big night'.
