Backyard Theatre brings comedy of flatting woes to Wellington

Backyard Theatre proudly presents the international premiere of Hunting and Gathering by Brooke Berman at the Gryphon Theatre in October. Described as When Harry Met Sally for hipsters, this play is a light-hearted look at flatting woes and the “quarter-life crisis”.

Ruth is gathering ex-boyfriends and old flats at an alarming rate. Jesse, her latest ex, has just bought his first place – alone. Bess wants a man and a flat, preferably as a package deal, and Astor wants to keep couch-surfing until ‘the right one’ comes along. But who will wind up with whom, and where will they all live?

Director Shannon Friday, says, “Hunting and Gathering is a witty romantic comedy for anyone who's ever surfed the TradeMe flat ads and wondered ‘Is this it?’”

Christchurch native, Libby Wilson, who plays Bess, has had her fair share of flatting nightmares. “Hollywood definitely gave me the wrong idea about flatmates! After a year of moving into a flat we got a new flatmate. Let’s call him Bruce. He was the male version of Cinderella, trapped in a flat with his wicked step-family who forced him to clean up his messes and wash his own clothes. He also decided to simply not pay his rent for 5 weeks claiming ‘There must be something wrong with the bank account coz it just won’t go in’.

“At the flat we had a rule, if you are throwing a party everybody has to get at least 4 days’ notice. Bruce, like many other things, clearly thought this didn’t apply to him and a party with his wasted, trashy friends ended up lasting for five straight days. Thankfully, I live alone now!”
