PlayShop Performance Company Presents: This Fair Verona

PlayShop Performance Company Presents:

This Fair Verona

Be a part of an improvised love story of Shakespearean proportions. Witness William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet collide with true love stories spotted in Wellington and the things you love and loathe about both Shakespeare and relationships. This Fair Verona, an original love story that could only ever exist today, made fresh before your very eyes each night.

The course of true love never did run smooth . . . Working with the audience, our merry band of improvisers will create a unique, contemporary landscape for our Romeo and Juliet to strut and fret their hour upon the stage. Taking our cues from Shakespeare’s tragedy, each night will see a new pair of star-crossed lovers’ misadventures. Will it be love at first sight? Would a rose by any other word smell as sweet? Will the Nurse get off with the Apothecary?

Our labour of love features witty wordplay, sonnets and soliloquies, rogues and ruffs, Elizabethan jigs, and live music provided by local band Toucan Stubbs. This Fair Verona is a spontaneous, sexy, hilarious reimagining of literature’s most enduring teenage couple.

PlayShop constitutes a new generation of Wellington improvisers, drawing from a pool of Toi Whakaari, Long Cloud Youth Theatre and Victoria University grads and students, all with a vested interest in theatre. PlayShop is characterised by intelligence, energy, solid stagecraft, theatricality and emotional honesty. We believe the skills and philosophies of improv can be used to create exciting, risky, accessible theatre of all types.
