Bright Sparks Awards 2013 finalists announced
Micro-computers and mobile apps popular among NZ’s young
tech innovators
A cat-feeder operated via mobile
phone, a robot that cleans high-rise windows and a
battery-charging shoe are among the finalists at the Bright
Sparks Awards 2013.
The annual competition, created by The Skills Organisation, encourages young people to experience electronics and technology directly through a project-based approach.
Bright Sparks manager Ross Petersen said there had been a noticeable increase in the sophistication of entries this year.
Modern technology, such as the new Raspberry Pi micro-computer and the use of apps, had been prevalent, he said.
“It’s a sign that these kids are into right-up-to-the-minute stuff – phones, tablets, app stores and capabilities they can now download,” Petersen said.
“They’re interfacing those technologies with things that they want to make and things that they want to happen.”
In recognition of that developing expertise, two new software awards will be presented this year.

The winners will be announced at the 13th annual awards ceremony on Tuesday October 29 at the Novatel Ellerslie’s Rimu Room.
The Skills Organisation's ambassador Blair Tuke, a silver medallist at London 2012 and world 49er sailing champion 2013, will be in attendance.
