Paul Radford’s new works explore the form of the guitar - creating a lyrical interplay between weathered paintwork and the sensuous line of the instrument. Using techniques he developed whilst working on film sets (including productions such as The World’s Fastest Indian and King Kong), he has aged and reassembled his timber panels to create a highly unique and textured body of work. The resulting paintings are at once both playful and meditative, evoking the maxim that all art aspires to the condition of music.
Artist statement: I do play guitar a little - not great, but ‘The Venus Guitar Club’ (which sounds like some backyard band) comes from the idea that the guitar reminds me of a venus figure and is also like a maori war club - so love, music and war all in the same shape. An idea I’d like to explore a bit more. -Paul Radford
The exhibition will take place at the Remuera Gallery, 360 Remuera Road, from 19 October - 2 November 2013.
Opening party Saturday 19 October at 3pm. All welcome.
