Self published New Zealand author, Dr. Bruce Bryant, has released a compelling work titled, A Small Window - Dirty Politics 101, which details the full events behind the state takeover of Te Wananga O Aotearoa (TWOA) in 2005.
By the dawn of the 21st century, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, created by Māori in heartland Waikato in 1983 to assist educational outcomes for Māori, was creating ripples in the tertiary education sector. By 2003, these ripples were nothing less than a tsunamic in size, having captured over of quarter of the sector’s funding and total student numbers.
Political forces, including Trevor Mallard and Ken Shirley conspired to assassinate that potential by targeting the reputation of the TWOA founder and Tumuaki-CEO, Dr Rongo Wetere, with tactics remarkably similar to that of the 1863 Waitato land confiscations to “better suit English settlement.” Prominent public figures including Sir Wira Gardiner, Graeme McNally (Deliotte), Brian Roache (PwC) and Allan Sargison (MoE) are also implicated.
A Small Window dissects what happened behind closed doors, who did what, how the public was hoodwinked, and highlights the individual contributions of the players mentioned above, in this must read, 21st century saga.
“The tragedy that Bruce Bryant recounts, in the authentic voice of the author, has a Shakespearean cast of characters and the ironic end-twist that invariably accompanies great drama. A Small Window, however, is not a distillation of history: it is an exhaustive and detailed account, from an insider’s point of view, of exactly how it feels to be done over, time and again” says a long time observer of Molesworth Street.
“This account by Dr. Bruce Bryant, A Small Window, explains in full the events which led to state takeover of Te Wananga o Aotearoa in 2005. I am grateful to Bruce who on his own accord was motivated to write his personal account in an endeavour to set the record straight. His efforts are an absolute contrast to some members of TWOA Council who by their silence and lack of support for Aotearoa Institute and myself, are hard to understand or comprehend.” ~Dr Rongo H Wetere ONZM – FNZIM – Founder of Te Wananga o Aotearoa

About the author
Dr. Bryant was a long time chartered accountant who specialised in forensic/investigative accounting and management advisory services, now retired from the profession, and lecturing in accounting related subjects at a multi-cultural tertiary institution.
“In view of the knowledge that I have of the
state’s actions in 2004 and 2005, I believe I have an
obligation to put pen to paper to record the events that I
see as being another dark chapter in Aotearoa New
Zealand’s interactions with its indigenous people. Hence
a doctoral thesis, followed by “A Small Window.” Dr.
