Have a Quail of a Time at the Wildfood Dinner
Upper Hutt hosts the 25th Rimutaka Sports Bar Pig Hunt and related events over this Labour weekend . Upper Hutt has a strong urban and rural mix with many local residents interested and active in hunting and fishing .The Rimutaka Tavern on SH 2 just north of Upper Hutt has been the base for most of the pig hunts . .
A highlight of this year's event is a Wildfood Dinner at The Riverfern Restaurant at the Tavern on Friday 25 October which will quail , wild pork sausages, and venison ragout on the menu .Bookings are essential for this on 04 526 9020 .
Venison Sausages will be on sale for the public to try at the weigh in on Sunday 27 October from midday .Organisers say it is an important part of hunting that everybody must be aware that any meat retained by hunters cannot be used for public sale or consumption . All the wild game food at the dinner and weigh is supplied through approved retailers .
At the weigh- in city folk have a rare chance to see the fruits of the hunters activity . Wild Pigs , deer and goats vary in quantity from adult hunters . Only pig boars are accepted now, sows were dropped to help protect breeding .Rabbits , hare and possums are normally hunted by the youngsters .
The pigs must weigh over 60 pounds to be included and only red deer are accepted . This is because one year an entrant brought in a very large Sambar deer .
The event has been moved from its normal Labour Monday timing to Sunday 27 October to enable celebrations with local band ' Rocks Off " to play from 7.30 pm at the Tavern.
The event has major support from Rimutaka Community Trust , Tavern management and Upper Hutt City Council .Rimutaka Lions Club have helped with logistics .
