Dish Named Cover of the Year At the Maggies

Media Release Tuesday 5th November 2013

Dish Named Cover of the Year At the Maggies

Dish (February/March 2013 issue) has beaten off fierce competition to be hailed as winner of The Maggies: Magazine Cover of the Year 2013. The cover which “evokes the simplicity of favourite Kiwi summer food”, beat titles across all five categories, to be crowned overall Magazine Cover of the Year, as well as winning the Food & Wine category.

Category winners:
Best Magazine Cover of the Year & Food and Wine Winner – Dish (Feb/Mar 2013)

Business & Trade Winner – Architecture NZ (Nov/Dec 2012)

Lifestyle Winner – MiNDFOOD (March 2013)

Specialist Winner – DPhoto 51 (Dec/Jan 2013)

Sports Winner – Adventure Magazine (June 2013 education issue)

Dish’s Associate Publisher, Lisa Morton, said of the accolade “We're thrilled that the February Dish cover has been voted best overall magazine cover in The Maggies.”

“A burger is in some ways an unexpected subject for a Dish cover – some would perceive it as too casual to be worthy of a cover – but it was very ‘of the moment’ in the world of food trends, where there has been a renewed interest in celebrating and reinventing everyday food. The issue was on sale at the height of the summer holiday season, and the burger – accompanied by homemade fries and a glass beer – evoked the simplicity of favourite Kiwi summer food. It clearly resonated with our readers too as it outsold previous February issues,” Morton said.

Initiated by online subscription company, iSUBSCRiBE, the covers entered in The Maggies were shortlisted by a panel of industry heavyweights, including Katrina Horton, Commercial Director of Magazine Publishers New Zealand, and Jude Dobson, TV Presenter and Producer. This shortlist was then put to a public vote via www.themaggies.co.nz, where over 20,000 votes were cast during a five week period.

Jude Dobson said of the winning cover, “As usual there was a wealth of wonderful covers to short list. Quite a job whittling them down! Always a pleasure to see the wealth of creative talent out there designing arresting mag covers. The NZ foodie within has voted and the resulting winner looks colourful, delicious and inviting to open.”

Publishers were encouraged to donate to Plunket, New Zealand’s largest provider of services to support the health and development of children aged 0 to 5, plus everyone who voted received a $5 iSUBSCRiBE gift voucher, with $1 from magazine subscriptions purchased with this voucher going to charity. Over $2,500 has been raised so far, with this figure set to rise.
