Weaving together a rich tapestry of blues, reggae, indigenous sounds and folk music, and singing from an unmistakably Australian songbook that has produced seven studio albums, two live albums, multiple ARIA nominations and won a global fan base of likeminded souls, Xavier Rudd is a phenomenally gifted one-man band who will return to New Zealand this summer to play three must-see shows with fellow blues travellers, Little Bushman.
With his trademark toolkit of slide guitars, yidakis (didgeridoos), stomp box and an assortment of driving percussion that he assembles around him, Rudd is a towering multi-instrumentalist who has wowed audiences worldwide with his incendiary live performances, where he alone fulfills the role of an army of musicians.
Rudd’s multitasking musicality is on full display on his most recent release, Spirit Bird, an album that soared straight to number two on Australia’s ARIA album chart on its debut. Having toured Spirit Bird throughout Europe, Britain, Australia, the United States and Canada – as well as a sprint through New Zealand back in April – Rudd touches down in Aotearoa in late December to once again wow local crowds with his prodigious playing and evocative storytelling.
Joining Rudd will be his musical brothers-in-arms, Little Bushman, who will serve up their potent brew of heavy psychedelic soul at all three of Rudd’s New Zealand appearances, truly a union of roots music brethren.
This meeting of minds will take place in Waihi Beach, Oakura and Motueka, essential dates on this summer’s calendar of live music. Be sure to catch this historic coming together of two of Australia and Aotearoa’s most gifted and revered musical treasures.
