Young Women Dominate as Severe Weather Stops Play at NZ Open
Nicole Toomey -
Women's Singles
Inclement weather got the better of Auckland greens on the first day of competition at The Trusts New Zealand Open 2013 and play was abandoned.
The Trusts women's singles and Ryman Healthcare men's pairs qualifying competitions were stopped due to monsoon-like rain that made play untenable before all bowlers were able to complete the three rounds of games.
Qualifiers were found from the section winners who played either three rounds, two rounds and ten ends, or two rounds only in The Trusts women's singles and Ryman Healthcare men's pairs.
Among the women who went through into post-section play were two rising young stars: 17-year-old Tayla Bruce (Burnside, Canterbury) and Nicole Toomey (Victoria, Wellington).
The young women won both rounds they played today, with Toomey (18) rolling out multiple national title-holder Anne Bateman in round two, 21-10.
Indicative of a growing pool of elite young bowlers, the pair represented New Zealand this year at the Trans-Tasman Test Series in the under-18 competition against their Australian rivals. Toomey also won the National Secondary School Championships singles event in 2011.
Men's singles and women's pairs qualifying matches will be played from 9am tomorrow morning at clubs around Auckland.
