Local Riders Aiming To Bring Laykold Cup Trophies Home

Wellington's track cyclists are aiming to bring home the silverware at the prestigious Laykold Cup, which will be held at Wellington Velodrome, Hataitai at 12-4pm on Sunday December 1 and is organized by the PNP Cycling Club. In 2012 New Plymouth's Cottam family clean swept all the major races, with Jeremy winning the masters' 8km Stayers Cup race, daughter Maxyna winning the women’s 8km Poneke Plate, and son Denay the 10km Laykold Cup itself.

However they will be challenged strongly by local riders this year, with on-form Zac Blakely primed for the Laykold Cup and BikeNZ under 19 development squad rider Ione Johnson a force to be reckoned with in the women's race. Wellington's masters competing for the Stayers Cup include multi-national champion Steve Chapman and consistent performers Grant Perry and Nick Warren.

Under 13, 15 and 17 junior cyclists will be aiming to score points in a series of races that go towards overall prizes at the end of the day. Wellington youngsters to watch are track league series leaders Louis Hodgkinson and Will Findlay plus under 17 girls Martine Barnes and Holly Blakely.

Riders from across the Lower North Island are expected to participate in the 86-year-old event which was originally presented to the Petone Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club in 1928 for the winner of a five mile handicap race held at Petone Oval. In recent years the event has morphed into a 10km scratch race with an afternoon of supporting races. Previous winners include four-time Commonwealth Games medalist Graeme Miller and Olympic bronze medalist Gary Anderson.
