Wellington Gangsta Wins Top New Zealand Comedy Award

Celebrated Wellington comic James Nokise brought home New Zealand’s most prestigious comedy award on Sunday Night at the New Zealand Comedy Guild Awards in Auckland: Best Male Comedian, along with Most Improved Comedian.
James had a full year of TV appearances (7 Days, Comedy Gala, Ben and Steve, Comedy Crack Up, and Back Benchers), as well as a weekly spot on Radio New Zealand, and several successful seasons of his 2013 solo show, So-so Gangsta, which is due to tour the country in September 2014. So-so Gangsta was also nominated for NZ International Comedy Festival’s top award: The Fred Dagg Award for best show.
Having grown up in Whitby and The Hutt, James was a teenage gang member turn comic and playwright. With this unique insider’s perspective at his fingertips, James’ comedy is smartly provocative, with a political and sociological bent.
Though he is still touring So-so Gangsta, James is busy writing its sequel which will premier during the NZ International Comedy Festival in May 2014, titled The Bronaissance. Once again, comedy will be pushed to its extreme when James brings his “bros” together to incorporate visual art, music, dance and poetry within the comedy walls of his very own take on The Renaissance.
