Highwic spinning and weaving a diamond celebration

A special exhibition of contemporary weaving will take place at Highwic, the historic property in Newmarket cared for by Heritage New Zealand, from November 1-16.

Entitled Woven Diamonds – the Art and Artistry of Hand Weaving, the exhibition will celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Auckland Hand Weavers and Spinners Guild.

“We’re delighted to be able to host this amazing collection of artwork at Highwic during the guild’s special anniversary year,” says the Manager of Highwic, Cheryl Laurie.

“The items that will be on display are quite something – and more than live up to their ‘woven diamonds’ reputation.”

The exhibition pieces will be displayed throughout different rooms of Highwic, providing an extra dimension to the visitor experience and will include pieces created by some of the country’s foremost artists in this field.

“We’ll be displaying work by Robyn Agnew – whose use of bold geometric shapes in wall hangings and floor rugs has led to some of her work being accepted by the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts for display in the National Museum,” says Cheryl.

“We’ll also have pieces by Alison Francis who has been weaving for 30 years, and is constantly exploring new weave structures and techniques to use in her work; and Lyn Walsh who has won a Complex Weavers award for her work.”

Visitors will be able to explore Highwic with the added bonus of being able to enjoy these stunning examples of ‘artwork with fibre’.

Normal Highwic admission applies for the diamond jubilee exhibition ($10 per adult; children and Heritage New Zealand members free – no additional charge for the exhibition).
