Two Waiheke artists exhibition at the Parnell Gallery

Olivier Duhamel & Sally Smith have been invited to take the upstairs room at the Parnell Gallery to show their latest sculptural works.
Presenting Oliver Duhamel and Sally Smith the " Form & Movement " joint Exhibition opens Tuesday 4th November and runs until 18 November 2014. Preview Tuesday 4th Nov 5:30 PM
These Waiheke-based
artists are each inspired by natural beauty, which informs
their stunning sculptural works in different ways. Together,
these accomplished proponents of Form and Movement
provide a rich opportunity to view their stylistically
diverse but equally exciting sculptural work in the upcoming
show with Parnell Gallery.
About Sally
Smith
Now a full-time artist, Sally creates
wall-mounted sculptures in bronze and aluminium, which are
finished in a black or dappled patina. Her work is a
celebration of the flora and fauna of New Zealand, aiming to
provoke thought around our natural heritage and its value
for future generations.
Once mounted on the wall, deep
shadows are cast from each component of Sally’s work,
creating dramatic three dimensional effects. In group
arrangements such as a flock of birds or a circling school
of fish, a sense of depth and flowing movement is thus
enhanced in the work. Sally’s previous life as an
architect can be sensed in the stunning lay-out design of
these installations. A fine geometry can also be found in
her single sculptures via the magnification of some of our
smaller life forms, such as a kina shell or a bee. With
subtle abstraction, Sally draws attention to the underlying
patterns of our natural world through these diminutive but
perfectly formed manifestations.
Sally Smith is the
director of TOI gallery in Oneroa.
About Olivier
Duhamel
Having lived and worked in NZ since
1987, French born Olivier has also achieved a masterful
command of his art. He finds abundant inspiration in the
human form and is a respected figurative sculptor. His
bronze figurines and laminated sculptures have won awards
and are held in many private and public collections,
including the Wallace Arts Trust. Olivier’s priority is to
convey the essence of his subject matter; “My creations
do not convey any particular message, do not attempt any
conceptual or symbolist exploration, nor do they search to
be innovative at all cost. I am rather trying to simply
capture the beauty and sensuality of my subjects of study.
When it comes to art, I am chiefly concerned with beauty,
emotion and mastery of my craft.” This approach can
be seen in the striking fluency of his pieces, which embody
a sense of joy and life. Duhamel is a prominent member of
the arts community and his work is represented in New
Zealand, Australia and Europe.
On Waiheke, Olivier
Duhamel is represented by the [ s p a c e ] gallery in
Oneroa.
